GUILDFORD additions

This compact addition to a turn of the century cottage in Guildford creates an efficient spatial solution on a constrained site. The clients wanted to replace their cramped 1970’s sleepout with a modest kitchen and dining space which kept its footprint to a minimum to allow for maximum garden space.

The family dining table is the focus of the space, with views to the courtyard and shady tree canopy to the east. The soft green flush kitchen cabinetry wraps around the dining table joining seamlessly with the pivot doors to the bathroom and laundry, the under stair storage and the stair to the loft, creating a calm, cohesive interior with a singular design intent.

This house is built on the land of the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation.

The clients were also keen to provide a flexible loft space on the first floor, but the Guildford Heritage policy precludes first floor additions that are visible from the street. We managed to find a solution which mirrors the existing roof pitch to conceal it from the street.

Externally, the design utilises materials prevalent in Guildford - red brick and corrugated iron, but inteprets them in a more contemporary way.

The interior uses soft greens and pink tones which complement the existing jarrah floors and create warm interior.
